This week’s adventure details

Waterfalls & Forest Exploration

Elk Falls Provincial Park — Thursday, October 15, 2026

About This Adventure

This week, CR-1 will explore the forests, waterfalls and canyon environment of Elk Falls Provincial Park. The park features an extensive 6 km trail system, old-growth forest, river and canyon viewpoints, and the spectacular 25-metre Elk Falls.

For this adventure, our Junior Hikers will explore the Upper Day-Use Area, travelling through mature coastal forest toward the Elk Falls viewpoints and Elk Falls Suspension Bridge.

The primary trail to the suspension bridge and viewing areas is approximately 800 metres on easy trails. There are some stairs required to reach the suspension bridge and south viewpoint, giving the crew an opportunity to experience changing terrain while keeping the adventure manageable for an after-school outing.

Along the way, we’ll slow down to explore the forest around us, practise trail awareness and hiking skills, and learn about responsible recreation in a protected natural area. Elk Falls contains areas of old-growth Douglas-fir and western red cedar, providing a great setting for nature observation and outdoor learning.

What to Bring

Please ensure your Junior Hiker arrives prepared for an afternoon outdoors. Campbell River weather can change quickly, and our adventures will continue in a variety of conditions when it is safe to do so.

🥾 Hiking or trail footwear — comfortable, closed-toe footwear with good traction
🎒 Small backpack — something your Junior Hiker can comfortably carry themselves
💧 Water bottle — filled and ready for the adventure
🍎 Snack — enough for an active afternoon outdoors
🌧️ Waterproof rain jacket — please come prepared even when rain isn’t expected
🧥 Warm layer — fleece, sweater or similar layer appropriate for the day’s conditions
🧢 Weather-appropriate extras — toque/gloves on colder days or a sun hat when appropriate
👕 Comfortable outdoor clothing — clothing that can handle trails, mud and changing weather

Please label personal items with your child’s name whenever possible.

Adventure Ready: Please check the weather before your Junior Hiker’s adventure and pack accordingly. We recommend dressing in layers so clothing can be adjusted as conditions change throughout the afternoon.
