Mill Hill Regional Park
A Place worth Protecting
A Westshore Adventure
Located in Langford, Mill Hill Regional Park is a 71-hectare protected natural area that rises from woodland to a 203-metre summit. Despite being surrounded by the Westshore, the park moves through several distinct environments, including Douglas-fir forest, Garry oak ecosystem and exposed rocky hilltop.
From the summit, hikers can look out toward Esquimalt Harbour and the Victoria area. The summit also contains a stone peak-finder cairn built on the foundations of a former BC Forest Service lookout tower—giving Junior Hikers a neat piece of local history to discover along the way.
The Trails
Mill Hill is rated moderate by the CRD. Its trail network includes the approximately 1.07 km Calypso Trail, 780 m Auburn Trail and 120 m Millwoods Trail, along with connections through the surrounding trail system. A route on the eastern side of the park can also connect hikers toward Thetis Lake Regional Park.
The terrain gives us plenty to work with for Junior Hikers: forest walking, elevation gain, exposed rock, viewpoints and changing ecosystems within a relatively compact park. Routes can therefore be adapted to the age, ability and objectives of each crew rather than every visit following exactly the same itinerary.
More Than a Hike
Mill Hill is particularly valuable for environmental learning. The park protects Garry oak habitat, and the CRD has undertaken ecological restoration work there, including efforts involving invasive species and sensitive natural areas.
That gives Junior Hikers opportunities to learn about trail stewardship, native ecosystems, invasive species and why staying on established trails matters—not simply hike to the top and turn around.
In spring, the park is also known for its wildflowers, with the CRD itself running interpretive outings focused on the blooms and the endangered Garry oak ecosystem.
A Little Local History
Long before becoming a regional park, the Mill Hill area had connections to forestry and land management. A BC Forest Service ranger station and fire-suppression camp operated in the area, and a lookout tower once stood at the summit because of its commanding view of the surrounding landscape. The tower was later dismantled, but its foundations remain. Mill Hill became a regional park in 1981.
